4 Wide Receivers Who Boosted Their Stock at the Combine, and 2 Who Should Have Skipped It Altogether: 2023 Combine Winners and Losers

In many ways the NFL combine marks the unofficial start to the 2023 offseason. Although best balls drafts are in full swing, it’s not until the annual underwear olympics that we get new data on soon-to-be NFL players. In a lot of cases this new data just confirms what we already expected. But occasionally there are some surprises — both positive and negative.

Those surprises at wide receiver often dictate how much early opportunity a player will see and in turn how much fantasy value he will have in his first two to three seasons. These are arguably the most important seasons for determining a player’s career trajectory. Therefore it’s worth understanding who did what they needed to do at the combine, who fell short, and who proved they are worth a closer look on draft day.

The Prospect Workout Explorer is updated with new data on every player who participated over the last few days, and offers a plethora of insight beyond just the raw numbers. Explore the recent results for yourself to find more winners and losers than just the few mentioned here.

Combine Winners

Marvin Mims

Shawn Siegele has already been arguing that Mims is not getting the attention he deserves. His combine performance should go some way toward correcting that. He clocked a 4.38 forty and also excelled in the explosiveness drills. Only three WRs were faster, and only four had a higher vertical. Mims measured in at only 5 feet 11 and 183 pounds, with just 9-inch hands (median for NFL WRs is 9.375 inches). He’ll need some athleticism to make up for a lack of size at the NFL level, but he showed he’s got more than enough. Many mock drafts have him going near the Round 2-3 turn. His size-speed combo at that draft position returns a number of intriguing comparable players.

Some icing on the cake: Mims also managed a sub-seven-second three cone (6.90).

How to Use the Win the Flex and Range of Outcomes Tools to Find Undervalued Wide Receivers

RotoViz was a pioneer of the idea of structural drafting, often in tandem with the idea that the flex wins championships and that fantasy football drafts are a race to fill the flex. But we’ve always paired structural drafting with evidence-based player-level research. Success in fantasy is not as simple as drafting the right number of RBs or drafting a QB in the right round,…...

Best Ball Mania IV is in full swing, and player ADPs are becoming more rigid every day as drafters anchor to the number next to a player’s name. This situation gives savvy drafters an advantage though, as it makes it much easier to plan a draft round-by-round. Using our Underdog ADP tool — now with the ability to show an ADP Draft Grid — we…...
